4 Ways to Keep Your Rug Clean in the Summer

During summertime, your rugs may get dirtier than they normally do. With kids on summer break, family barbecues, and holiday gatherings happening throughout the summer, your rugs will be subjected to more dirt and foot traffic. To keep your rugs clean this summer, use these 4 tips.

  1. Keep Shoes At The Door

To keep any dirt, sand, grass, or germs out of your house, your shoes can be left at the door.   Walking around your house in shoes can track in plenty of dirt and debris throughout your house. You can make “no shoes in the house” a new rule and get a shoe cubby for your family’s and guests’ shoes.

  1. Take Gatherings Outside

The best way to keep dirt out of your home is to entertain outside. Summer provides great weather and long days so you can keep the party going. By entertaining outside, you can cut down on stains and spills from happening on your rugs. Get an outdoor patio rug to help brighten up your outdoor living and entertaining.

  1. Vacuum Regularly

Routine vacuuming on all your rugs will help remove the dirt, dust, and allergens.  Vacuuming will also prevent traffic patterns to form which brings extra wear on the rug’s fibers. Aim to vacuum your rug at least once a week. If you have pets and/or family with allergies or asthma, try to vacuum a couple of times a week.

Be sure to also vacuum the floor around your rugs.  Dirt and dust can accumulate around the rugs and be tracked onto the rug. A solid rug pad will keep any dirt and grit from working through the rug to get onto the floor.  Then, when your rug is walked on, the dirt underneath rubs on the floor and can affect the shine of the urethane floor finish.

  1. Treat Spills & Stains Right Away

Spills and stains are bound to happen. Even if you’re in the middle of a party or barbecue, treat the stain as soon as you can. The quicker the stain is treated, the more likely you’ll be able to get the stain out and keep your rug looking beautiful.  Spot clean with a spray bottle filled with 3/4 water, 1/4 white vinegar, a drop or 2 of liquid dishwashing soap.

If a drink is spilled on your rug, you need to use folded cotton towels to draw out the liquid. With towels under and on top of the spill apply pressure.  When you blot, make sure you don’t rub. Rubbing may fuzz the fiber and spread the stain pushing it deeper into the rug fibers making it harder to remove. If spotting doesn’t seem to remove the stain, call a professional rug cleaner instead of continuing to clean the rug and maybe causing permanent damage.
